Here’s a monster buck that Scott found in KS, I stuck a pic of it up on the trophy gallery but thought I would use tonight to show you what is possible out there. 4 main beams and over 200 inches of bone…..can we have a moment of silence please. In Colorado half of the bulls are stripped as of today. 40 in the field last night, I saw 23 tonight nothing real big. Had some good news on a trail cam for antelope today so I did get my first positive set. Need a couple more. That shed is the buck we were hoping for someday I’ll post the pic, unfortunately because people get crazy over big deer and do things they shouldn’t I can’t show you the antler, just picture big. Scouted 87 for rifle antelope hunters today we could have finished up on 2 mid 70’s bucks. I got a good lead on 2 big mule deer bucks from a landowner I’ll check those out tommorrow. All for now. P. S. - Wes got word from one of our eastern Colorado contacts last week and he said he found a 8 point mule deer shed (1 side) - biggest shed he’s ever seen. Wes meets with him this week and I can’t wait to see a picture of this horn - We’ll keep you all posted (especially you Hal). Comments Off First KS No BrainerPosted by Wes on 13 Aug 2007 | Tagged as: Scouting Scott sent these today. After pulling 6 cameras and coming up with smaller bucks and alot of does he was rewarded with this good buck on the honey locust lick. First no brainer of the year on camera though it’s great to pick them up on camera we know they are there but finding them that’s the ticket. I set cameras for antelope tonight, found 20 bulls I’ll post more in the AM but I think 2 of them were big. I’ll get a better look at them in the morning sun maybe get some pics. Still no big mulie, I’m going Tuesday to look at a shed that one of our landowners picked up, sounds like it’s a bruiser. It’s from an area that we chased a 200″ buck in last year I’m hoping it’s that bucks shed. Comments Off So do we sit water for elk?Posted by Wes on 10 Aug 2007 | Tagged as: Scouting
The title says it all. Tonight after watching the heavey horned 3×4 I heard a cow call below me about 400 yds around the bend. I grabbed my camera and took off thinking “maybe they will water with shooting light left.” Sure enough they did and although dark footage I watched 16 elk including a 5×5 bull enjoy the perks of 7 inches of rain as they danced into the quencher. It was a welcome sight as so often our critters here are nocturnal when they hit water. Pleased, I turned around and raced up the hill or tried that is atleast to burn out my lungs, on my way up the incline my body asked very legitimate questions. I don’t think it has ever been this hard to get in shape. A deer snorted and I scanned quickly put my camera down and glassed deep front troting over the hill. That’s my first look at him and he did look impressive! He is (as Rob has been saying) not likely to make it another year. Where is Earl? Comments Off Fuego would have been donePosted by Wes on 08 Aug 2007 | Tagged as: Scouting
I snuck up on this buck we call Fuego this morning. At 28 yds he would have been done, he’s a great management buck for all of you who are coming to hunt a management buck. Also a great buck for an archer I have one in mind and you would know who you are. A super 3×3 those backs are 18 inches or so making Fuego a close Pope and young buck. Also saw another 26 inch 4×4 that was crabbed. Still looking for that high 180 buck that is a wow. I did see my first bomber antelope this morning as well and labled him goosey. Just to show you guys what’s happening in archery antelope side of things here’s what it looked like out my truck window, if you had a 57 yard pin you would be in the money right here. We look good as far as mature bucks to harvest but it rained again tonight, not sure what to think about all this moisture it’s great for our country it just makes it tough. We’re into the stages now where moisture brings the high protein forbes to the surface so the bucks don’t need to come to the alfalfa like in normal years if water is no good we can channnel bucks through a fence crossing. But this year they have so many forbes that random is the best way to describe the antelope and random is not very effective. This may be the year to break out the tricks. Later Comments Off |
