Here’s a young KS 8 pt with great potential.  A perfect example of what we want to let walk by us this year as we begin the project of creating an incredible deer herd.  A young buck like this has potential to be an absolute stud.  He’ll never be anything other than a main frame 8 pt but looks like he is starting a drop off his beam on the left side.  Exactly what we want to see.  Several bucks are hitting this mineral station this is the only good pic that we got.  We have 13 cameras rolling right now on mineral licks and feeders so we should start to get a good idea of what is out there.  Also posted a couple more pics of “Lucky” that Rob pulled he’s a super consistent buck right now.  More rain today antelope is still looking tough.  Needs to dry out………really needs to dry out.

Promise in Kansas

10 pt KS July 11web.jpgScott pulled this pic on the 11th of July I just haven’t got around to posting it.  He worked 13 hours today on feeders and cameras and checking mineral licks, got into seed ticks and humidity that frogs swim in and was still excited when I talked to him a little bit ago.  That’s what every whitetail hunter needs a guy that is more excited about whitetails than he is.  He found a neat buck that I will post when I get the pic.  Rob should update on Lucky tonight as well.  Kansas looks better than it ever has,  we have great expectations for the 2007 season.  Tonight in Colorado I saw Guapo, Ace and a new buck super tall crabbed in the front and 23″ wide a great management buck.  Also saw 3 bulls a 240″ 5×6 a 260′ 5×5 and a 300″ 6×6 that if not for his short thirds would have been 320″ because of his great beam length.  All for now.

ELK NEWS ON THE NEW RANCH

Checked a couple cameras tonight on the new elk ranch for all of you that are coming to hunt the archery elk and muzzleloader season.  There were 64 pics total and most of them of bulls.  I’ve posted a few here that you will like to see.  We are getting rain every day more rain than I have ever seen during this time of year.  These bulls are coming to a mineral lick and the grass is layed over from traffic.  Water cameras are no good here.  Other scouting for antelope is delayed we have to see some sort of drying out before we pump these water holes that are undesirable dry. So far they will just fill back up as we got 4 inches of rain last night.  Great for last push antler growth.

Lucky’s 2007 Return

Lucky07a.jpgLucky07b.jpg    Hello all,  Sorry for the delay in getting these posted. As you all know I went fishing last week on the Grand Mesa in Southern Colorado, what a blast -  we caught 113 cutthroat, brookies and rainbows in only 3 days.
These pictures were taken off a stock tank on the southwest side of the ranch.  We believe the 26″/27″ buck on the left of both pictures is “Lucky” from last year.  He does not have the 9″ long G-1 from last year and he grew a G-2 in its place (boy did he grow up).  The Buck on the right is a newbe, we’ve never seen him before and I am totally pumped to watch this deer grow up.  He has a tripod on both front ends and a lone kicker on his left side making him a 18″ wide, 5×6 that is probably only 2 years old - what a buck (I wish the picture was larger so you could see all of his junk).  If anyone has a good name they want to donate - send it to me at rob@atkinsonexpeditions.com and we’ll see if we can use it.
I have not checked camera’s since last Saturday and I can’t wait to see what other suprises are waiting for us (maybe Earl?).  We’ve been pounded with rain over the last week and got over 3.5 inches alone yesterday - talk about a late push for antler growth - we’ve got some great bucks this year.  Check back soon, I’m sure they’ll be something good to see.    Robert

July 17 2007 Graves sow and two cubs 005_0002.jpg July 17 2007 Graves sow and two cubs 005_0001.jpg

While scouting our new ranch for elk I got to watch this sow and her two cubs for an hour or so.  Bears being bears at a young age is mostly funny.  As they have no idea of depth perception, and that there is no way to go out on that limb and not crash to the ground.  Many times I watched them tumble to the ground while they grasped for one more handful of berries, not that they cared because apparantly they have way more spirit than sense and were back at it as soon as they hit the ground.  Mom didn’t care and just gorged herself selfishly unaware of her kids.  I told Chanse to grab one by the nose just to see if she would notice.  He declined…..it’s hard to get good help these days.

OK so August is here and I will be more consistent with my daily posts for you over eager souls that can’t stand to wait a month to get out here.  I’m headed out tonight as I need to figure out where a mule deer is watering for Jolie and Rachelle so they can continue their success in 2007.  We are getting rain everyday so that will likely be challenging, water is everywhere. No kidding I can’t believe season is already here.
