We Have Heavy Horned Mule Deer Too!!!!!!!

Ron Buck 2007 023web.jpg

What a fantasticly fun fast frozen foggy morning to see 5 shooter bucks.  This is the buck that got to us first so here he is.  We have some buyers remorse with him as he is the smallest of the bucks that were headed our way, but what a buck.  We got  excited in the fridgid morning air and maybe shot to quick as the buck we wanted hadn’t made himself visible and was no doubt on his way.  Opportunity nocked with a day and half to hunt and Ron shot him in the heart at 380 yds.  Definitley got the heart pounding this morning!!!!!!!

Wade buck 2007 001web.jpg

We took Deep Front today.   First time client Wayde from Utah was able to make a perfect shot and make a quick, clean kill.  We were surprised at his 14 1/2 G3’s and G4, awesome to finally put our hands on this great buck.  Rob spent many a happy day filming him over the last two years.  Thanks for growing him up Rob and thanks for spotting him for Chanse and thanks to Wayde for a perfect shot.  We’ll get another one soon.  I really like hunting mule deer.

Congrats to Madison!  Madison was able to make a perfect shot on this
doe and harvest her first animal of any kind!  She worked for it
too!  Over the weekend she belly crawled over 300 yards total, went
face to face(about 1 foot) from a baby rattler, stepped within 2 feet
of a 3 foot rattler, bared 90 degree temps while running out of
water, and got poked with too many cactus to mention.  This stalk was
the last stalk possible before we had to leave.  The stalk started
about a half mile away from where they were bedded.  We were able to
get within about 200 yards and get set up.  They were up out of their
beds, and started to make their way towards us.  There was one lone
yucca plant between us and the does that made great cover, but a
nervy timeframe for Madison.   I told her to wait until she had
cleared the bush, once the first doe presented a shot I told her to
take her, and Madison waisted no time in drilling her right behind
the shoulder with a perfect shot!  I can tell you it was one special
weekend for father and daughter.

Rifle Elk Success!!!!!!!!

Mundo 008web.jpgJohn Burton 006web.jpgBrent Chadwick 004web.jpg

I’ll say this was the most challenging rifle elk hunt we have ever done.  But in the end we found success.  Wheather was non-compliant the elk were skittish, and some days we couldn’t find them.  Our friend Ricardo from Sinaloa, Mexico overcame great barriers to help his dad harvest his first elk in what will likely be his only trip to Colorado.  We brought it down to the wire to the last hours of the hunt but long time school principal Jon hung in there passing on bulls to harvest a great 6×6.  And Brent went home in the middle of a tough hunt opting for elk steaks and his first bull, a tall horned 5×5.  So honestly not the  hunt we have been used to, not sure that it helps me sell hunts but it was tough.  We had plenty of elk but some mistakes and bad conditions left us grinding it out to the last day.  I will add at the end here that this 4 year run puts us on this hunt at 23-24 on kills.  We stuck it out in this one though and hunters went home happy.  Guides relaxed a bit and we lined up more great elk footage for the 2007 DVD.  Now we get to hang up the cow calls and change gears, TIME TO HUNT SOME DEER!!  And can I just add that we have deer!

First Bull of the rifle season Congrats Randy!

Randy Chadwick bull 003web.jpg

Randy was able to make a 347 yd shot today to put this 6×6 down.  Unable to advance on the herd Chanse cow called the bull into an opening.  Chanse asked Randy 5 times if he could make that shot, later we learned that Randy had his feelings hurt by his concern.  So Randy heart shot him to fill his tag and harvest his first bull elk.  They just stopped by with their bull and they are soaked as it drenched them while they were packing elk out tonight.

Rain and wind made for some rough conditions otherwise I would be posting a couple more bulls as we got super close today in a herd of 80 plus but couldn’t close the deal.  Frustrated as we were chalk one up for the elk, it’s good to see them win from time to time as long as they don’t make a habit of it.  Hello from Randy to Canyon Texas.

A couple of good ones at the end

Patrick took care of Tom and Dave as they were able to harvest their first Colorado antelope.  Eastern Colorado offers landowner tag opportunities as well as lower numbers of points needed to obtain tags.  Tom and son Dave were able to make the most of their first experience to Eastern Colorado and harvested two good bucks.  Congrats guys and hope to chase Eastern Colorado whitetails with you in the future.
