Northern Colorado Elk Update

Posted by Rob on 12 Aug 2009 | Tagged as: Scouting

First off, good luck to all the archery antelope hunters starting us off this year - Saturday morning is the opener and by day’s end, someone will have drawn first blood.

As for our archery elk and deer hunters starting in approx. 2 weeks, here are a couple new trail camera pictures to get your blood pumping.

I believe this is the 6 x 7 from my last post and it appears he is rubbed off his velvet - first of the year.

The 6 x 6 in the background of these two picturs is new to me - can’t wait to run into him on the montain !!  The younger bull in the foreground is no slouch, but I think he needs another year or two to reach his potential (although his body suggests he’s an older bull - look at that belly - old man ???)

Look at the potential this 3 year old bull is showing - sweeping 3rd’s,  a 3″ long devil tine and a great 6 point frame.  Wait until he gets all his body mass requirements and watch out !!  I wish I had some deer pictures to share as well, but the cameras are not picking them up.  I’ll be setting some new locations this weekend and with any luck I get some good ones.  Take care and be safe -  see you all soon !!

antelopegamecamera3Outdoor Expeditions Scouting Report
07/15-07/25 2009
Southern Colorado

Things look to be shaping up for another great season in Southern Colorado. We have had a busy last couple of weeks scouting and getting the ranch house ready for our Antelope opener August 15th.

Despite a significant amount of rain early in the summer, things seem to have dried out to the point that the “speed goats” are back to utilizing regular water holes and our cameras are picking up bucks almost daily.

While game cameras are great, nothing beats the “tried and true” methods of scouting (raking out water holes and spending lots of time with a good set of optics glued to your eyeballs) and we have been doing plenty of both. On average we are seeing between 10-15 “shooter” bucks on each venture to the ranch. Checking and re-raking water holes every other day is showing us great numbers of tracks in each blind location which should translate to great opportunities for our hunters.

The blind locations have been set and, if you are hunting with us, plan on shots in the 15-30 yard range. While some blind locations may move slightly, we will do our best to keep our hunters within that range.

While we’re talking about ranges…now is a great time to discuss what you, the hunter, can do to prepare yourself for your hunt with us.

• Shoot, shoot, and shoot your bow! The more comfortable you are with your equipment, the better your chances of success when that big ol’ buck puts his head down for a drink. As I mentioned, blinds are placed for shots in the 15-30 yard range. Practice at these distances until you are consistently hitting a 4 inch by 4 inch square. It may seem redundant but preparation is the key to success.
• Practice in different positions, you will mainly be seated for the majority of your hunt so it is imperative that you are comfortable shooting from this position.
• Mentally prepare yourself for long days, heat, and a significant amount of boredom. While hunting over water holes isn’t always “in your face” hunting, it is proven to be the most effective means of taking an antelope with a bow. Bring something good to read and be prepared to sit from sunup until sundown. We will do all that we can to ensure you are as comfortable as possible.
• Write any questions you may have for your guide down as you think of them. If you are hunting with us this season, on of your guides will be contacting you in the coming weeks to discuss your hunt and any special needs or considerations you may have.
I hope that you have found this information useful, be sure to check back in to the site frequently for additional reports.

2008 Season Kicks off with some GREAT bucks and bulls found!

Posted by Wes on 26 Aug 2008 | Tagged as: Scouting

Summer has been crazy almost too crazy with Argentina, Africa and Alaska.  Now I notice as I write that I still haven’t shared my Alaska photos from our Tikchik Wilderness trip with Wade Renfro.  Top class outfitt for the angler ready to jump in a float plane and find some dumb fish.  Not many places left you can catch a rainbow that has never been caught before.

Great trip but now it’s time to get started in our own backyard.  With anticipation buzzing the aquisition of more eastern colorado leases and buisness stuff that has robbed me of many a scouting trip this year we have still managed to find some great animals.  Here’s a photo or two that I can share there is other news that I’m not able to post yet.  But how lucky are we in Colorado to chase on opening day bucks and bulls of this caliber.006.JPG  I’ll do my best to post the stories as they happen this year and we are sure to have another fun year ( I promise to not stress again…….right).

August 20 2008 Running Late 103-1comp.jpgI’m very excited about this buck that is on the home page as well, we’ve grown him up and kept him alive and now one of my very good friends Marty gets to have the first crack at him on opening day August 30th archery season.  Be sure to follow up on our first elk hunters of the year as well.  I can’t believe it is already here again.

Trail Camera Surprises!!!!!!!!!!!!

In our flurry to be ready for this weekend’s elk, deer, and antelope hunters we have been checking cameras every day.  The first two pics were on a deer setup - we were trying to see if a mule deer buck was watering during the day.  What we found was a super pronghorn and trouble.  Not what we wanted to find as it is a very unlikely spot for a pronghorn and we have TOO MANY LIONS…..anybody want to come hunt them when the snow falls?  The other pics are good news for our lady hunter coming to stand hunt on this pond for her first elk.  Trail cameras are incredible tools and the only way we can effectively pull this off.  I will add that we are getting way too much rain today for water to be very effective, but what do you do.  Improvise.  Also one more recent pic of Lucky.

Finaly a Good Muley

Even at a mile I could tell he was a shooter a no doubter and then he laid back down and I never saw him again.  It’s 5 miles from where we last saw “growing pains” but it could have been him…….maybe.  What a relief to see a shooter.  Got another positive set in unit 9 for archery antelope and good news for unit 87 as well.
